My all time favorite children’s book is The Giving Tree. If you haven’t already read it I highly encourage you to take the 3 minutes that it would take for you to read it. The simplicity of this book is what makes me adore it so much. Shel Silverstein wrote many books, mostly humorous poetry books like Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic. The story line is so basic yet so moving to me because I feel that this is the way we were created to live our life. Sometimes all we need to do is to take it back to the basics of children books to teach us a lesson on life.
I actually love The Giving Tree so much that I have a big tattoo of this exact image that is to the left here! It’s about this tree that becomes best friends with a boy. The tree let’s the boy swing from her branches, eat her apples and shades him when he is tired. As the boy grows older he becomes interested in other things and so the tree gets lonely over time. When he does return he decides he wants to go see the world, so The Giving Tree offers her trunk for him to sail around the world. She becomes a stump, but yet is so pleased that she can still provide for him. The boy returns and is quite old; all she can offer him now is her stump for him to rest on, and so he does.
I just love the simple and pure actions of The Giving Tree. She literally would do anything and everything for this boy. Doesn’t this book teach us one of the most important meanings in life? Jesus laid down His life for us so that we may do the same for others. It reminds me of this quote,
“God’s definition of what matters is pretty straightforward. He measures our lives by how we love.”Francis Chan
We were created to live, serve and love all to no end. If we do not grasp this simple meaning of our lives, what are we living for? We are measured by God on how we love His people. The Giving Tree loved this boy with an unconditional love. Be the tree, serve with no grudges to all who step in your path, and show the love of God that this world so desperately needs to feel.
Love. Be loved. Know love.
