I am in this constant wrestle with myself on figuring out who exactly Jesus was as a person, the Son of God, and as a teacher. Some carry on this argument that Jesus was simply just a good teacher whose teachings were interesting and decent. Some just say he was an ordinary man who did good deeds and some say He never existed. All these are fair arguments; I get every perspective and point of view because there have been many times people want to prove me wrong about who He actually was. However, to me, Jesus indeed is the Son of God and his time on earth should not be taken lightly, but if you truly read what the Word says about Jesus you will indeed find that He was actually a pretty humorous guy. Yes, Jesus did and still has quite the sense of humor.
Beautiful Outlaw by John Eldredge was the book that got me really thinking on who exactly He was; I highly recommend this read. This Son of God who was sent to save us has quite the intriguing personality. I have many favorite parts in this book but one of my favorites is right in the beginning when Eldredge breaks down a few verses in the book of John. Okay, so Jesus just conquered death, he rolls on out of this tomb where he rose from the dead. Most think of Jesus as this great religious dude right? So when an all-powerful, Son of God, conqueror of death raises from the dead we would think He would go to a temple or a synagogue and reflect on everything after his resurrection. Well not this guy. In John, it tells us that Jesus goes to the shore of the Sea of Tiberias where his disciples are out fishing, after everything they had been through; their leader being crucified, what better way to cope afterwards than to fish right? Jesus appears to them on the shore and shouts out to them to drop their net on the other side since they were not catching anything. They do so and could barely lift the net because it was so heavily loaded with fish. It was then that they miraculously realized it was Jesus standing on the shore. Immediately Peter jumped out and swam to Him, while the others followed along in the boat. They then feasted on their fish and hung out together on the beach.
Reading the Gospels, without the personality of Jesus, is like watching television with the sound turned off. You get a very dry, two-dimensional person doing strange, undecipherable things.John Eldredge
Let’s think about how bizarre this is! Jesus rose from the dead and the first thing he does is go kick it by the beach, help his friends catch some fish and chill?! We can see we have got this image of Jesus all wrong. We put Jesus on this high pedestal and think that no one can reach him because of his vast greatness and power. No! Jesus came to BE with us so that we may know who He truly is! He wants you to seek Him out, talk to Him, and read all about who He is. His personality is out of this world and will be the most incredible personality you will ever encounter. Religion has destroyed how we think of Jesus. It is comforting knowing that our beautiful Creator knows how to be playful and humorous at times. We have to grasp who Jesus really was because if we don’t we will never fully understand God’s Word. As John Eldredge says, “Reading the Gospels, without the personality of Jesus, is like watching television with the sound turned off. You get a very dry, two-dimensional person doing strange, undecipherable things.”
Know who He is, get a hold on His personality and live your life with Him right by your side.
Love. Be loved. Know love.
