Dear Teenager,

Dear Teenager,

To the heartbreaker, the athletic one, and the loser; to the indecisive, the lovebirds, and the band geek; to the ones who are suicidal, with divorced parents, and the daddyless; to the frightened, the rule breakers, and the punk rockers; to the ones who are sick, the overachievers, and the kind girl next door; to the ones with a perfect family, the foster kid, and the rich one; to the drug addict, alcohol abuser, and the sex addict; to the generation that I absolutely adore and love to the very core of my being, I write to you.

I write to you because there has been something stirring inside me for the longest time. I write to you because I am afraid you don’t hear this enough. There is not a single bone in my body that isn’t cheering you on and praying for you. You see, there is this God that is insanely crazy about his children. These lucky and undeserving children are every single person in the world. Being a teenager is tough and frankly at times, it just sucks. There is something you must know that might not surprise you, people will always disappoint you. There will be that friend that ditches you to go hang with the boyfriend/girlfriend. However, there will come a time, if it hasn’t happened already, that you will do the same to them. There will be times your so called “friend” spills your secret to another and you will hate them for it, and then there will be times that you say the one thing your friend begged you not to tell anyone and you will feel horrible and regret it.

Our human nature gets in the way of being the person we should be. When the would is screaming at you to hold that grudge, to lie, to take those pills, to smoke that joint, to put that razor blade to your wrist, to starve yourself to look pretty, to be the perfect student, to take your clothes off, to click on that porn site…please know that there is another option. There is always another option because the God who is divine, merciful, and perfect in everything he does, created you, YOU, to be more than all of these things. He gave you that way out so you wouldn’t have to feel trapped and alone. There will be bullies your whole life, people who think less of you, and people who will ignore you and to those people I say we pray for them, because no one else will.

I want you to know that you are not defined by the sports you play, the instrument you practice, the clothes you wear, the music you like, the cleavage you show, the curves you have or don’t have, and the grades you receive. Things of this world don’t define who you are. Our identity is only found in the Creator of this world. Don’t for one second think you have to please anyone, because you don’t and the satisfaction of doing so will be temporary and then you will look onto the other pleasures of this world and come up dry, alone, and confused. Your identity is defined in God and how He sees you which is beautiful, brave, courageous, and wonderfully known. Rest your identity in Him, that will be eternal.

“The great thing to remember is that though our feelings come and go God’s love for us does not.”C.S. Lewis

Forgive those who have wronged you and let go of the grudges, if you don’t, they will become you and bitterness will own you. If God can forgive all of us for the things we do daily, then you can forgive your parents, your friends, and your enemies. Did you know your parents don’t know what they are doing half the time when raising you? Did you know they are learning just as much as you are? Parents mess up too so please don’t hold your parents against things, Lord knows they deal with your crap everyday and they still love you.

I am so passionate about each and every one of you and I want you to know that there is someone who loves you more than I do and more than your parents do. That there is someone who is always on your side and someone who is always looking out for you in the hallways at school when you seem invisible. You are important to the world because the future is in your hands and the world doesn’t need more perfect, straight A students, it needs the teenagers of this world to love and forgive better than the generation before it because if the world sees that change in you, there might be less suicides, less school shootings, less enemies, less overdoses, less cutting, less eating disorders, and less teenagers who feel worthless. You literally have the capability of changing the world because there is a God cheering you on to respond in love, forgiveness, mercy, and grace because He has shown all those things to us even though we are so undeserving of it.

“Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.”C.S. Lewis

I write to you because I love you and I want you to know that without you, I would not be who I am today. You have shaped my life and have made me love and want to change for the better. Most importantly you have brought me closer in my relationship with God. So the next time you think no one cares about you or no one wants to be your friend, remember what you have done for me and continue to do for me. You give me a life worth living to the best of my ability and you bring pure joy into this crazy, bizarre life of mine. God is working for you and knowing that alone should give you the confirmation that you are loved and have nothing to fear. You can do it because you were made to.

Love, your number one fan.

Love. Be loved. Know love.
